The Chessmen of Lewis

chess in colour_edited_edited.png

The 12th Century Chessmen of Lewis have always fascinated me.  They are thought to have originated from Norway, are carved from walrus and whale's teeth and disovered at Uig Bay on the Isle of Lewis in 1831.

My interpretation of each character has been very popular and as I free carve each one quickly develops their own distinct character in their own grumpy little way!

My Chessmen, or any other commissioned pieces, can be shipped worldwide - just contact me to discuss.

I expanded an my preparatory sketches to create small Gouache portraits of each piece

And creating a surrealist architectural piece incorporating all these elements....
